Mediating Variables: Observational Measures of Parenting

Supportive Presence T3 Rating across full set of mother-child teaching tasks, reflecting the degree to which the mother is emotionally supportive and encouraging toward her child during the structured tasks. This rating had a potential range from 1 to 7, with higher scores indicating more supportiveness (Weinfield, Egeland & Ogawa, 1998). Interrater reliability for this rating was high, with an intraclass correlation of .79.

Quality of Relationship T3 Rating across full set of mother-child teaching tasks, reflecting the affective and behavioral reciprocity of the mother-child relationship. This rating had a potential range of 1 to 7, with a higher score indicating greater relatedness and mutual engagement, with conflicts readily and amicably resolved (Weinfield, Egeland & Ogawa, 1998). Interrater reliability for this rating was high, with an intraclass correlation of .78.

Quality of Instruction T3 Rating across the full set of mother-child teaching tasks, with a potential score of 1 to 7. This rating “evaluates how well the mother structures the situation so that the child knows what the task objectives are and receives hints or corrections while solving the problems” that are timely and well-paced, provided in a progression that the child can follow, and stated clearly (Weinfield, Egeland & Ogawa, 1998, p. 78). Interrater reliability for this rating ; was high, with an intraclass correlation of .77.

Book Reading Quality T3 Rating based on observation of maternal behavior during the book reading task. A composite of three ratings (each with a possible range of 1 to 3): Intonation and Animation, Comfort Level, and Fluency. Composite could range from 3 to 9, with a higher score indicating better quality book reading. The ratings were completed by one coder, and reviewed by an experienced coder. Discrepancies were discussed with a third coder until consensus was reached (De Temple & Snow, 1998).

Ease of Ideas T3 Rating based on observation of maternal behavior during the word guessing game task. Range of 1 to 4, with a higher score denoting a better understanding and use of effective strategies to get the child to name as many wheeled objects as possible. Ratings were completed by one coder, and reviewed by an experienced coder. Discrepancies were discussed with a third coder until consensus was reached (De Temple & Snow, 1998).
